One name that has answer to possibly all the questions under the sun….except one, its own birth day-Google!
Yes…even if you look surprised, Google’s birthday is possibly the only fact that Google is confused about. Why?
Well, that’s a long story and here’s our take on it…
Well for quite some time now the company has been marking 27th of September as Google’s official birth day on the Google Home page as well. But there is a lot of confusion associated with Google’s birthday otherwise.
When is Google’s Birthday?
The company was found by two friends Larry Page and Sergey Brin in the year 1988. Since the year 2006, the company has been celebrating its birthday on the 27th of September but earlier it used to celebrate it on 26th of September. In the year 2023, Google alluded to the confusion over its birth date and admitted the company has celebrated its birthday on four different dates. However, it later stuck to the date September 27. There are chances that the company preferred using this date since it was used by the first birthday Doodle in 2002.
What is Google’s age ?
Since we have no appropriate answer to the question ‘when is Google’s birthday?’, we really can’t answer this one as well, ‘What is Google’s age?’
So the difficult question to answer here is the current age of Google. While this answer is not too simple to answer, we can do a quick calculation. The two cofounders of Google, Larry Page and Sergey Brin had started the company in the year 1996 (January). It was initially started as BackRub but later came to be called Google. According to this date, Google is 22 years old. But since Google.com was registered in the year 1997 (September 15), it makes the company 21 years old accordingly. The question can actually be answered in many different ways. There are different people and then there are different perceptions.
Google’s Birthday is a matter that does not have a clear answer. It all depends on how you plan to measure it…
- From the time when the two cofounders met in 1995.
Larry Page and Sergey Brin first met in the summers of 1995. Larry Page was about to attend Stanford for grad school while Sergey Brin was a grand student in second year and was assigned to show Larry around. While the two of them did not become good friends instantly, they later collaborated on working together on the same project of starting a search engine.
- When Larry Page and Sergey Brin started working on their project (January 1996)
Larry Page was working on his idea of BackRub search engine. He later used some innovative methods and renamed as Google. Later, Sergey Brin also got interested in the idea and started working for the search engine. Later the project had got really big and it had started affecting the Stanford’s network as well.
Once things started working out and got brighter, both the friends were persuaded to drop out of Stanford and launch Google as a startup.
- When Google was registered (1997)
Google was registered in 1997 with the domain name www.google.com
- When Google was launched (September 1998)
While the company got registered in the year 1997, it officially started operations only in September, 1998.
This leaves us with four different years that can be used to count Google’s age. Most of the times, it is seen that Google uses the official launch year 1998, to calculate its age. So it all depends on the people on how they wish to calculate Google’s age or what they consider as the actual birthday of Google. This is the simple reason that there is so much of confusion about the date of birth of Google or its current age.
However, in the recent years, the company has been using 27th September as its official birthday. This means you can expect to see a special Google Doodle on this day.
A lot of people might not be aware of the fact but in case you have registered with a Google account, you will get a personal birthday cake doodle on your birthday. So enjoy!
